The Capo Wine Bar Story

Our story at Capo began many years ago with a trip to California where our owner, Julie Fields, visited Napa and Sonoma.  Her favorite wine bar wasn’t the one with the rolling vineyards, instead it was the tiny place where the sommelier told her he “bottled the sunshine in the wine.” Julie has never forgotten those words. Fast forward to Julie meeting her husband and Capo co-owner Terry Peebles and travelling to Traverse City, Michigan for their honeymoon.  Julie was blown away by the wine in Michigan and the small, friendly wineries on the Old Mission Peninsula. She began to dream of owning her own wine bar someday.Julie and Terry both have degrees in education and have been teachers for the majority of their careers.  Terry is a high school teacher and football coach at Harrison High School; Julie, an early education teacher who ran Ms. Julie’s private Pre K for 8 years. Those children and families will forever own a piece of her heart. The desire to try something new amplified when Terry and Julie turned 50.  Julie took classes to earn her level one sommelier certificate and the plans for Capo began to form.Capo has an Italian influence to honor Julie’s beloved father David, a proud Sicilian who loved a good glass of Chianti. Capo means “the boss”, a nod to Julie’s personality as the spunky, youngest child in her family who became the first to graduate from college - Boiler Up!  At Capo we will do our best to build community bridges, support local charities and make Capo a gathering place for both locals and visitors. You will meet our families here, the children: Zoey, Isaac and Tanner along with our extended family.  We would not be here without the support of our family and loyal friends.  We are dedicated to serving delicious wine with a smile.  We promise to be your non snobby source of wine, beer, snacks and to always bottle the sunshine!
